Application

Thank you for your interest in the Radiology Residency Programs at MUSC. We have (3) PGY-2 IR Integrated positions available and (2) PGY-6 Independent IR positions available for the 2026-27 appointment year.

Our residency programs participate in the NRMP Match and applicants must submit application materials through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications are complete when the following is received through ERAS:

  • Common Application Form
  • Personal Statement
  • Medical School Transcript
  • Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (at least one of these letters should come from a radiologist)
  • Official copy of your USMLE Scores

Our minimum criteria include:

A medical degree from an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, or medical school outside of the United States or Canada along with ECFMG certification.

Interviews are by invitation only. We receive over 170 IR Integrated applications and over 80 IR Independent applications each year but are only able to interview approximately 27 IR Integrated candidates and 35 IR Independent candidates. If you are offered an interview, you will be contacted via email to schedule your interview online utilizing the Thalamus scheduling system. The most important aspects of the application are grades in clinical clerkships, membership in honor societies, class standing, MSPE, USLME scores, leadership experience, volunteer work, research/publications, and significant life experiences. Those applicants from schools that do not offer AOA are not adversely affected. Applications are reviewed from a holistic approach.

We value applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds. We seek candidates with broad-ranging academic and personal experiences. Each of our residents brings unique gifts and qualifications which strengthen our program. We encourage qualified applicants from all regions of the country and from a variety of backgrounds and experiences to apply. The program will consider sponsorship of J1 Visa for highly qualified applicants.

Interviews for all IR Integrated applicants will be conducted virtually this year. IR Independent applicants will also be interviewing virtually this year. In preparing for virtual interviews, we have made some thoughtful changes to our interview process that we hope will give you an opportunity to experience the culture of our department, focus on education and meet our outstanding faculty and residents. The interview day will start with an introduction to the program. Applicants will interview with multiple faculty members including the Program Director. There will be time during the interview day to interact with residents in breakout rooms. We hope you have an enjoyable virtual visit with us.

For the IR Integrated applicants, we will be hosting an informal virtual happy hour with residents the night before your interview. We hope this experience will be similar to our previous pre-interview dinner. Although this is an optional event, we hope this experience will be extremely valuable as it will give you an opportunity to meet some of our residents in a causal setting.

Both IR programs will be hosting a virtual Meet and Greet prior to the start of interviews. Here you will get to meet some of our residents and get a feel for the program and residency life here at MUSC.

The IR Integrated residency requires completion of a one-year ACGME-accredited internship prior to beginning Radiology residency training. Our program is linked with a surgical internship within the MUSC Department of Surgery. MUSC Surgery Interns will have surgical rotations relevant to VIR practice including Vascular Surgery, Transplant Surgery and Oncology Surgery as well as one rotation with radiology. Applicants do not need to apply independently for their internship year through ERAS but do need to rank both the Surgery and the IR Integrated programs.
