Transplant Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program

book_2 Learning Mode: Residential

Advanced training. Meaningful mentorship. Exceptional clinical experience.

Train where transplant medicine meets infectious disease, at the only comprehensive transplant program in South Carolina. Led by Courtney Harris, M.D., the Transplant Infectious Diseases (TID) Fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a rigorous, mentor-driven one-year clinical fellowship designed for physicians ready to specialize in the care of immunocompromised patients. MUSC is South Carolina's #1 ranked hospital and its largest healthcare system, giving TID fellows unmatched clinical breadth and case volume from day one.

Why Train Here?

MUSC is home to one of the most active transplant programs in the Southeast. As a TID fellow, you'll gain hands-on experience across the full spectrum of transplant and cellular therapy, caring for patients that most programs simply can't offer:

  • ~700 solid organ transplants per year (heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas)
  • ~150 hematopoietic stem cell transplants (SCT) per year
  • ~50 CAR-T cell therapy recipients per year
  • Full LVAD program with dedicated ID multidisciplinary clinic

No other program in South Carolina trains at this volume or variety.

Program Structure

The fellowship is designed to build clinical excellence and launch your academic career.

8 months of dedicated clinical training, including:

  • Inpatient TID consult service
  • Elective rotations with abdominal transplant, SCT, thoracic organ transplant, transplant pharmacy, and antimicrobial stewardship teams
  • Weekly half-day continuity TID clinic
  • Combined LVAD-ID multidisciplinary clinic
  • Participation in multidisciplinary selection committees for solid organ and stem cell transplants

4 months of dedicated mentored research, with the expectation of at least one published manuscript and/or abstract submitted to a nationally recognized conference before graduation.

A robust educational curriculum, including:

  • Novel 52-week self-study curriculum developed specifically for TID
  • Donor call online module training
  • Dedicated TID didactic sessions throughout the year

Mentorship & Career Development

Mentorship isn't an afterthought here, it's built into the program's foundation. Fellows receive regular one-on-one career-planning meetings, guidance on navigating national societies, and structured exposure to the full range of TID career pathways: clinical practice, protocol development, medical education, research, and beyond. Every fellowship is tailored to the individual fellow's goals.
