Interventional Radiology Residency Programs

The Vascular & Interventional Radiology Division offers positions in an ACGME accredited IR Integrated and IR Independent residency programs. The section, which is staffed by seven faculty members, cares for more than 6,000 patients and performs over 8,000 procedures per year. The VIR Division features six state-of-the-art angiography suites, a hybrid OR, two dedicated CT guided procedure suites, and a dual-source CT scanner for performance of high resolution cardiovascular imaging. MUSC has historically offered 4 fellowship positions per year, 2019-2020 being the final fellowship year.  With the ABMS approval of the IR/DR dual certificate residency, we currently have full ACGME accreditation for both IR Integrated and IR Independent residency.

MUSC accepts IR Integrated applicants currently in their final year of training in either an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, or medical school outside the United States or Canada along with ECFMG certification.  Our program participates in the NRMP Match (Integrated and Independent) and match information can be found on the NRMP website.

Applicants must submit application materials through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications are complete when the following is received through ERAS:

  • Common Application Form
  • Personal Statement
  • Medical School Transcript
  • Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (at least one of these letters should come from an interventional radiologist)
  • Official copy of your USMLE Scores

Our current IR Integrated Residents are Dr. Gunnar Forsberg (PGY6-Chief), Dr. Max Stroebel (PGY6), Dr. Brennan Day (PGY5), Dr. Clark Phelps (PG54), Dr. Mohamad Mardanbigi (PGY4-Chief), Dr. Jack McAlhany (PGY4), Dr. Tony Rizk (PGY3), Dr. Erin Scott (PGY3), Dr. Matthew Bridges (PGY2) and Dr. Brian Jacobs (PGY2). Our current IR Independent Residents are Dr. Chad Brady (PGY6) and Dr. Kirk Gillen.

We have transitioned from the conventional model of IR Fellowship training to the new Interventional Radiology dual certificate pathway. We now offer both Integrated (accredited for 10 residents) and Independent (accredited for 2 residents) pathways.

MUSC is ACGME accredited for Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR). ESIR will include three full years of diagnostic radiology experience including the standard three months of IR during PGY-2 through PGY-4 years. The PGY-5 year will include an ICU month + nine months of IR resulting in 12 months of IR training during the R1-R4 (PGY2 to PGY5) years of residency. The PGY-6 year will then be dedicated to 12 consecutive months of IR.

Residents who match into Diagnostic Radiology will have the opportunity to pursue Interventional Radiology by applying for ESIR during residency.

Our training curriculum fully meets all requirements of the new dual certificate residency, including clinical experience in outpatient clinics, an inpatient admitting service, and an inpatient consult service.

Please visit our IR Residency Application Page if you are interested in applying to our Interventional Radiology Integrated Residency program. If you're interested in applying our Diagnostic Radiology Residency program with the possibility of applying for ESIR during your residency, please visit our Residency Application Page.
