The History of Surgery Research Recognition Day

In 2006, with the support of then Chairman of Surgery and now President of MUSC Dr. David J. Cole, Vice Chair for Education Dr. Jon van Heerden, and Program Director Dr. Tom Brothers, the MUSC Department of Surgery instituted its first Resident Research Recognition Day. The day was designed to showcase and celebrate the exceptional research work in which our residents and fellows participate.

Resident Research Recognition Day expanded over the next several years to include presentations from department postdoctoral scholars. As such, the day was renamed Surgical Research Recognition Day.By 2011, in addition to the individual project mentors, Dr. Denise Carneiro-Pla served as moderator of Surgical Research Recognition Day. Her role grew and in 2012 she served as both moderator and Surgical Research Recognition Day program director. Also in 2012, the program expanded to include a guest lecturer to deliver a talk, providing an opportunity for faculty and residents to stay abreast of the latest data and research.

In 2016, in honor of Dr. Eric R. Frykberg, an MUSC Surgical alumnus who built a brilliant and productive career that has made the practice of Surgery safer, better, and smarter, the MUSC Department of Surgery dedicated the Surgical Research Recognition Day lecture in Dr. Frykberg’s memory. The event was renamed and is now the Eric R. Frykberg, M.D. Lecture and Surgery Research Recognition Day.

Dr. Jean Marie Ruddy led the efforts of Surgery Research Recognition Day and Drs. Denise Carneiro-Pla, then Associate Professor of Surgery and Associate Program Director for Research, and Dr. Michael Yost, Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of General Surgery Research, facilitated and instructed the residents, medical students and postdoctoral scholars in the principles of research.

From 2018-2021, as Associate Program Director for Resident Research, Dr. Jean Marie Ruddy assisted residents in identifying research mentors and engaging resources to help them meet their individual research goals as well as the residency program’s research requirements, and coordinated the program for the annual Eric R. Frykberg, M.D. Lecture and Surgery Research Recognition Day event. In 2022, Dr. Heather Evans, Vice Chair for Clinical Research and Applied Informatics, assumed the leadership of the event, bringing on a program committee of representative department faculty and building on Dr. Ruddy’s innovations to facilitate audience engagement and resident participation. In 2023, Dr. Thomas Curran joined the leadership team, co-chairing SRRD.

The coordination of our 2024 program was led by Thomas Curran, M.D., MPH, Chair of Surgery Research Recognition Day, Kathryn Engelhardt, M.D., MS, Vice Chair of the Surgery Research Recognition Day Program, and Jean Marie Ruddy, M.D., Vice Chair for Research.
