Meet Our Regional Fellows

Regional Fellows: 2023-2024

MahajanMelissa Mahajan, MD - Dr.Mahajan is originally from cold and snowy upstate New York-Go Bills!- and went to undergrad at Hobart & William Smith Colleges, followed by medical school at SUNY Upstate. She sought warmer pastures for residency and thankfully ended up here at MUSC with her husband, urology resident, Pat. They have three "fur babies" who run their house and lives. She is excited to stay in Charleston for another year to complete her Regional Fellowship. 

Brenden Moore, DO - Dr. Moore grew up in Houston, Texas. He graduated undergrad from Baylor University and medical school from the University of North Texas. Outside of work, he enjoys anything related to Baylor/Houston sports, visiting the many Charleston breweries, and going to the pool with my wife and 18-month-old son!

Peter Schnaak, MD - Dr. Schnaak is originally from Atlanta, Georgia, and he studied Biochemistry and Political Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He attend medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also earned a Master's in Bioethics. He completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of California (UCLA), and he is now excited to return to the region and continue his training at MUSC. His family has long-time connections to the Lowcountry, and his parents now live in Georgetown. In addition to spending more time with them, Dr. Schnaak looks forward to rediscovering Charleston and all that the area has to offer. 

Derek Shirey, DO - Dr. Shirey grew up north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and studied Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Grove City College prior to attending Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency training with Allegheny Health Network where he was Chief resident during the 2022-2023 academic year. While in medical school, Derek met his wife, Kaitlin, and they have since welcomed two doodles, Leukin and Benny, to the family. As a family, they enjoy being outdoors, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. An avid sports fan, Dr. Shirey enjoys supporting the Pittsburgh professional teams, the Chelsea Blues, and the Nittany Lions football teams.
