Advanced Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Fellowship Program at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) offers a one-year, non-accredited advanced training experience, specifically designed for physicians who have completed a gastroenterology fellowship. Our program is dedicated to fostering expertise in the management of complex IBD cases, equipping fellows with the skills necessary for independent practice as IBD specialists.

Located in Charleston, South Carolina, the program leverages MUSC's state-of-the-art clinical and research facilities, ensuring a well-rounded experience in both patient care and academic investigation. Fellows will gain hands-on experience in the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of a broad spectrum of IBD cases, including Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and microscopic colitis.

Scope of Training:

  • Clinical Excellence: The fellowship emphasizes both inpatient and outpatient care, with rotations in advanced IBD clinics, endoscopy units, and collaborative experiences with colorectal surgery, pediatric IBD, radiology, and pathology. Fellows will lead the inpatient IBD service under the supervision of our expert faculty.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Training at MUSC is enriched by collaboration with specialists in surgery, rheumatology, dermatology, nutrition, and psychiatry, providing fellows with a holistic approach to IBD management.
  • Research and Scholarly Activity: Fellows will have the opportunity to engage in clinical, translational, or basic science research projects, with mentorship from leading researchers in the field. Presentation of research findings in national conferences and peer-reviewed publications is strongly encouraged.

Program Highlights:

  • Duration: 12 months of intensive training.
  • Positions Available: One highly competitive fellowship position is available each year, allowing for personalized and focused training tailored to the fellow’s interests.
  • Educational Activities: Fellows are expected to participate actively in MUSC’s academic environment, including weekly IBD meetings, Grand Rounds, journal clubs, and multidisciplinary conferences. This structured educational curriculum covers landmark trials, evolving treatment guidelines, and the latest advancements in IBD research.

Upon completion of the fellowship, graduates will be exceptionally well-prepared to lead independent IBD practices or pursue academic careers that contribute to advancing the field of IBD care and research.
