Healthcare Engagement Committee

Whitener, S

Stephanie Whitener, MD

The Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine is committed to engaging individuals of different backgrounds in the field of anesthesiology and reflecting the community in which it operates. Led by Dr. Stephanie Whitener, the Healthcare Engagement Committee aims to integrate initiatives within the department's mission, operations, and strategies and to continue to foster a work environment that values, develops, and advances a broad range of backgrounds and perspectives.

This committee has representation from all facets of the department with faculty, CRNAs, residents, techs, administrative, and research staff.

Our Mission

We are dedicated to creating and promoting an environment of belonging for every member of the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine. We work to foster an community that values, develops, and advances a broad range of perspectives and backgrounds, and innovation. We seek to educate ourselves on healthcare disparities within our community to improve care for all patients and encourage honest conversations to increase our understanding and appreciation for each other and our differences.

Resident Engagement Curriculum

Through a program that rolled out in 2020, we are taking it upon ourselves to study the roles, effects, and biases of inequity in the medical field. We have compiled a list of peer-reviewed articles, Ted Talks, and various other sources that span a range of topics as they apply to the practice of medicine and beyond. By educating ourselves and our preop clinic staff in our intern year, we hope to become better physicians and help provide better care for our patients who regularly put themselves in a vulnerable position within the healthcare system.

MUSC has additional resources available to support residents. More information can be found through our GME Office.
