Breast Imaging Fellowship

The Medical University of South Carolina is pleased to offer three one-year fellowship positions in Breast Imaging. The MUSC Breast Imaging Division is a comprehensive program composed of digital breast tomosynthesis screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, and breast MR imaging. All interventional breast imaging procedures including ultrasound guided, stereotactic guided, tomosynthesis guided and MR-guided breast biopsy are provided. Both wire and non-wire localizations are also provided. The MUSC breast imaging faculty, are all fellowship trained in breast imaging. The faculty are actively involved in national meetings (ARRS, AIUM, ABR, ACR and RSNA), and are active members in ABR, ACR, and AIUM in addition to the Society of Breast Imaging.

There is ample clinical work to expose the fellow to the entire gamut of breast imaging. The main campus of breast imaging is at the NCI-Designated cancer center, Hollings Cancer Center in downtown Charleston. Additional breast imaging facilities are located in the Charleston area and include MUSC Health East Mount Pleasant, MUSC Health West in West Ashley, and MUSC Health North in North Charleston. The fellow will be exposed to high volume numbers in all breast imaging modalities and procedures. We have expanded growth in all breast imaging areas. The department is a site for a tomosynthesis multi-institutional ACR trial.

The fellow participates in all aspects of the division and is expected to help teach medical students and residents and to coordinate the monthly Breast Imaging Pathology conference. This imaging/pathology correlation conference is a tremendous learning experience for the pathology and radiology residents. There also is a weekly multidisciplinary breast tumor board in which all of the newly diagnosed breast cancer cases are reviewed. The Breast Imaging Division plays an important and integral role in this conference. This is generally the fellow's responsibility to prepare and present at these meetings and this serves as a great learning experience for the fellows.

The fellow is expected to be involved in presenting journal club articles a few times a year to the division. Willingness of the fellow to be involved in research projects of the division and to complete / publish / present is encouraged. The research endeavors are closely monitored by the attending staff who serve as mentors for these responsibilities. The fellow will meet with the fellowship director several times a year for mentorship, self-assessment/learning plan, and career development.
