The Medical University of South Carolina is pleased to offer two fellowship positions in Breast Imaging. The Hollings Cancer Center Breast Imaging Division is a comprehensive program composed of 2D and 3D (Tomosynthesis) screening mammography, diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MR imaging and all interventional breast imaging procedures including Tomo guided and MR-guided breast biopsy. There are six MUSC breast imaging faculty, three of whom also share time in the Ultrasound Division of the department. The faculty are actively involved in national meetings (ARRS, AIUM, ABR, ACR and RSNA), and are active members in ABR, ACR, and AIUM in addition to the Society of Breast Imaging. The fellowship is primarily centered on Breast Imaging but there is flexibility in the program to allow for some exposure to other aspects of Women's Imaging such as pelvic ultrasound and pelvic MR imaging.
There is ample clinical work to expose the fellow to the entire gamut of breast imaging. In 2015 we performed a total of 24,994 exams including 13,723 screening mammograms, 6,027 diagnostic mammograms, 3,691 breast ultrasound examinations and 412 breast MR examinations. Among total of 1,141 interventional procedures, we did 209 needle localization procedures, 217 stereotactic biopsies, 601 ultrasound-guided biopsies and 47 MR guided biopsies. With recent Tomo installation in our facilities, we expect an approximate 15 to 20 percent growth this year. The department may be a site for a tomosynthesis ACR trial headed by Dr. Etta Pisano.
The fellow participates in all aspects of the division and is expected to help teach medical students and residents and to coordinate the monthly Breast Imaging Pathology conference. This imaging/pathology correlation conference is a tremendous learning experience for the pathology and radiology residents. There also is a weekly Hollings Cancer Center multidisciplinary breast tumor board in which all of the newly diagnosed breast cancer cases are reviewed. The Breast Imaging Division plays an important and integral role in this conference. This is generally the fellow's responsibility to prepare and present at these meetings and this serves as a great learning experience for the fellows. The fellow is also encouraged to participate in all types of surgical procedures with our outstanding breast surgeons, Drs. Nancy Demore, Andrea Abbott, David Cole, and Mark Lockett.
The fellow is expected to be involved in the ongoing research projects of the division and to complete / publish / present at least one paper. The research endeavors are closely monitored by the attending staff who serve as mentors for these responsibilities. Based on their efforts, the fellow may be given some academic time during the year.
This non-ACGME fellowship is a one-year only junior faculty (Clinical Instructor) position within the College of Medicine. Applicant must be able to obtain a permanent SC medical license prior to the start of the fellowship. Information regarding SC permanent medical license eligibility can be found at South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation (PDF)
