Breast Imaging Fellowship

The Medical University of South Carolina is pleased to offer two fellowship positions in Breast Imaging. The Hollings Cancer Center Breast Imaging Division is a comprehensive program composed of 2D and 3D (tomosynthesis) screening mammography, diagnostic 2D and 3D (tomosynthesis) mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MR imaging and all interventional breast imaging procedures including  tomosynthesis guided and MR-guided breast biopsy and both wire and non-wire localizations. MUSC breast imaging faculty, three of whom also share time in the Ultrasound Division of the department. The faculty are actively involved in national meetings (ARRS, AIUM, ABR, ACR and RSNA), and are active members in ABR, ACR, and AIUM in addition to the Society of Breast Imaging. The fellowship is primarily centered on Breast Imaging but there is flexibility in the program to allow for some exposure to other aspects of Women's Imaging such as pelvic ultrasound and pelvic MR imaging.

There is ample clinical work to expose the fellow to the entire gamut of breast imaging including at our MUSC downtown Hollings Cancer Center, MUSC Health East Mount Pleasant, and MUSC Health North in North Charleston. Volume numbers include approximately 27,879 exams including 15,874 screening mammograms, 6,039 diagnostic mammograms, 4622 breast ultrasound examinations, 1407 interventional procedures, and 621 breast MR examinations. We have been performing tomosynthesis in our facilities since 2016 and have seen expanded growth in all breast imaging areas. The department is a site for a tomosynthesis multi-institutional ACR trial headed by Dr. Etta Pisano.

The fellow participates in all aspects of the division and is expected to help teach medical students and residents and to coordinate the monthly Breast Imaging Pathology conference. This imaging/pathology correlation conference is a tremendous learning experience for the pathology and radiology residents. There also is a weekly multidisciplinary breast tumor board in which all of the newly diagnosed breast cancer cases are reviewed. The Breast Imaging Division plays an important and integral role in this conference. This is generally the fellow's responsibility to prepare and present at these meetings and this serves as a great learning experience for the fellows. The fellow is also encouraged to participate in all types of surgical procedures with our multiple outstanding breast surgeons.

The fellow is expected to be involved in presenting journal club articles a few times a year to the division. Willingness of the fellow to be involved in research projects of the division and to complete / publish / present is encouraged. The research endeavors are closely monitored by the attending staff who serve as mentors for these responsibilities. Based on their research efforts, the fellow may be given some academic time during the year. The fellow will meet with the fellowship director several times a year for mentorship, self-assessment/learning plan, and career development.
