Pilot Project Program

Since its inception in 2002, the MUSC SCOR/E has incorporated a highly successful Pilot Project Program supported by institutional funds provided annually by the University Provost’s Office and the College of Medicine. The MUSC SCOR/E has funded 48 pilot projects from a variety of disciplines (e.g., Medicine, Epidemiology, Nursing, Neurosciences), and data generated by the pilot projects have resulted in 111 manuscript and abstract submissions and supported 71 extramural grant applications for sex/gender-focused research, of which 46 have been funded. In the previous funding period, we awarded 14 projects based on rigorous peer review. In addition to producing numerous publications and extramural grants, the pilot program has helped expand the number of researchers at MUSC conducting sex- and gender-focused research. During the current SCORE renewal period, similar models for reviewing, selecting and tracking pilot projects will be used.  The Pilot Project Program is under the leadership of Dr. Carmela Reichel.
