Pilot Project Program

Since its inception in 2002, the MUSC SCOR has incorporated a highly successful Pilot Project Program supported by institutional funds provided annually by the University Provost’s Office and the College of Medicine. The MUSC SCOR has funded 33 pilot projects from a variety of disciplines (e.g., Medicine, Epidemiology, Nursing, Neurosciences), and data generated by the pilot projects have resulted in 88 manuscript and abstract submissions and supported 43 extramural grant applications for sex/gender-focused research, of which 25 have been funded. In the most recent funding period, we received more than 30 competitive pilot project applications and awarded 11 projects based on rigorous peer review. The SCOR pilot projects produced numerous publications and extramural grants, and helped expand the number of researchers at MUSC conducting sex- and gender-focused research. During this SCORE renewal period, similar models for reviewing, selecting and tracking pilot projects are being used.
