How to Apply: Post Graduate Year One

National Resident Matching Program

For the first year of postgraduate training, MUSC programs participate in the National Resident Matching Program. Registration for the matching program is handled through the Dean's Office of the applicant's medical school.

You can learn more about the National Resident Matching Program, please visit the MATCH website.

Applications will be accepted at MUSC up to the closing date set by the NRMP.  However, due to of the volume of applications received for review, interview and rank, it is in the applicant's best interest to have applications and supporting materials submitted via the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) at the earliest opportunities.

Interview Slots

Once an applicant has been invited for an interview, interview slots are available on a first-come, first served basis. Instructions for consideration will be given to married couples who want to do residencies at MUSC in either the same or different programs. Please be sure the program director notes that information during the interview process.

Application Requirements

Applicants should be sure that all support materials, including the Dean's Letter, transcript, and other recommendations use the same name, whether the applicant chooses to retain the birth name, assume a married name or hyphenated name, or use a legally changed name. Not doing so may result in two separate and incomplete files.

The following is a list of requirements that must be met and materials that must be received before each applicant's file is considered complete:

  • Completed application with a recent photograph
  • Dean's letter
  • Official transcript
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation, one of which should be a DOM Summary Letter of Evaluation or Chairman's Letter
  • One additional recommendation may be submitted, but is not required
  • Personal interview
  • Step I of the USMLE examination or COMLEX level 1 must be passed on the first attempt
  • Step II USMLE scores should be submitted via ERAS

The Department of Medicine accepts applications only through ERAS. Do not FAX or email any application materials.
