Critical Care Elective

One 4-week Critical Care Elective is required for all MD students in their final year, and Critical Care Electives are available across five specialties. Students will work with interdisciplinary critical care teams to learn about the evaluation and management of acute care illness. Students will be involved in treating critically ill patients with a variety of complex diseases and will become familiar with the basics of mechanical ventilation, intravenous fluids, shock and vasoactive medications, surgical emergencies, procedural indications, and end-of-life care in the ICU.

Emergency Medicine

EMED 822 Essentials of Emergency Medicine is required for all MD students in their final year. Students will work six 9-hour shifts during a 4-week period in the Emergency Department as a member of the care team. The ED operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and shifts will be scheduled accordingly with a combination of day, evening, and overnight shifts. During each shift, students will interact with patients, learn how to perform an expeditious and focused H&P, order appropriate diagnostic tests, formulate a differential diagnosis, and treat and manage various illnesses and injuries.

Externship

One 4-week Externship is required for all MD students in their final year, and over 30 Externships are available in a variety of specialties. On this rotation, students will work with the clinical team to provide patient care and will be expected to participate at the level of an intern (with appropriate supervision). Students will have opportunities to practice skills in preparation for becoming an intern, including giving/receiving a handoff, writing inpatient orders, preparing a discharge summary, calling a consult, and assisting with obtaining informed consent.
