Summer Medicine Academy

Students taking part in a didactic session on campus.

Description

The Summer Medicine Academy is a one-week residential program. This program is jointly sponsored by the South Carolina Area Health and Education Consortium (AHEC) and the College of Medicine. Fifteen (15) Academy Fellows take part in a week of clinical and didactic sessions on the campus of MUSC, a shadowing experience, as well as a community service project. Didactic sessions and project topics focus on health disparities prevalent among South Carolinians.

Objectives

The program is designed for students from underrepresented groups, including students with disabilities, those from rural backgrounds, first-generation college students, members of the LGBTQ+ community, those from disadvantaged or marginalized backgrounds, and other students interested in addressing health disparities in the communities they serve:

  1. To prepare students from various backgrounds for entry into health professions programs in South Carolina
  2. To build a future healthcare workforce that reflects the wide range of communities in South Carolina
  3. To increase the likelihood that students will choose to practice in communities that need healthcare services
