Adult Emergency Department

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program is based at The Medical University of South Carolina, a 709 bed institute with approximately 62,000 annual admissions. The 10,000 square foot Emergency Department hosts 43 beds and a dedicated 128-slice CT scanner off of the resuscitation bay. A pod system is employed which divides the Emergency Department into separate areas. The A-side hosts 9 beds including the resuscitation bay and seclusion; The B-side hosts 12 beds, the C-side hosts 8 beds, the D-side hosts 12 beds; and Team Triage hosts a 6 bed fast track unit. The adult Emergency Department receives approximately 51,000 annual visits and is staffed by physicians as well as physician assistants whom have access to all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. In 2009, the Emergency Department expanded to include the Ashley River Tower Adult Specialty Emergency Center, a state-of-the-art facility which hosts 9 beds and receives approximately 11,000 annual visits.

Pediatric Emergency Department

The Pediatric Emergency Department is a newly renovated, dedicated unit hosting 12 beds with over 25,000 annual visits and an admission rate of 13 percent. The Pediatric Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day with an additional Quick Care unit open during the day. The Pediatric Emergency Department is a Level 1 Trauma Center and the staff has access to all pediatric medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. In 2009, a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship program was approved.
