Clinical Training
The Rheumatology and Immunology Fellowship at MUSC is an ACGME-accredited, two-year training program led by Program Director Faye Hant, D.O. Designed to develop exceptional clinicians, educators, and scholars, the fellowship combines rigorous clinical training, dedicated mentorship, and meaningful research opportunities.
Our fellowship provides comprehensive, hands-on clinical training across varied outpatient and inpatient settings. With more than 10,000 outpatient visits annually, fellows gain extensive experience diagnosing and managing the full spectrum of rheumatic diseases.
Build Expertise Across Multiple Clinical Settings
Fellows train in dedicated continuity clinics at Rutledge Tower, MUSC Health West Ashley, MUSC Health East Cooper and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center
Weekly clinics, guided by experienced faculty, provide consistent mentorship, progressive autonomy, and long-term patient relationships that strengthen clinical decision-making.
Learn from Complex Cases Across the Care Continuum:
Inpatient consultative training takes place at MUSC University Hospital, Ashley River Tower, MUSC Children’s Hospital, and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.
These settings expose fellows to a wide range of rheumatologic conditions in both adult and pediatric populations, preparing graduates for success in academic medicine, private practice, and subspecialty care.
Advanced Training in Specialized Areas:
As South Carolina's leading academic health system, we offer a collaborative learning environment, outstanding faculty mentorship, and broad clinical experiences that prepare fellows for careers in academic medicine, clinical practice, transplant medicine, and subspecialty care.
Areas of focused clinical expertise include:
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
- Scleroderma
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Osteoporosis
- VasculitisPediatric Rheumatology
Research: Discover, Investigate, and Contribute
Research is an integral part of fellowship training. Early in the first year, each fellow partners with a faculty mentor to develop a clinical or basic science research project.
Fellows gain experience in:
- Study design and development
- IRB submission and approval processes
- Data analysis and scholarly presentation
- Participation in ongoing clinical trials
This structured mentorship helps fellows build the skills needed for lifelong academic and clinical inquiry.
Education: Develop as a Clinician, Teacher, and Scholar
Fellows play an active role in teaching and academic leadership. As the rotating teaching fellow, participants help lead weekly division rounds alongside faculty and provide educational support to medical students and internal medicine residents.
Fellows participate in a rich educational program that includes:
- Rheumatology Grand Rounds
- Internal Medicine Grand Rounds
- Journal Club
- Pathology and Radiology Conferences
- Professors’ Rounds
- Basic Science Conference
- Carolina Fellows’ Conference
Fellows are encouraged to present scholarly work at local, regional, and national meetings, building professional networks and academic visibility.
For those seeking advanced academic training, the fellowship offers opportunities for an extended three-year pathway focused on research and the pursuit of a Master’s in Clinical Research.
