Mission
The mission of the Office of Assessment, Evaluation & Quality Improvement (OAE-QI) is to ensure the accreditation of the undergraduate medical education program in the College of Medicine (COM) by: (1) providing accurate and reliable data relevant to Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) standards, (2) generating and interpreting data on student outcomes to facilitate evidence-based decisions about curricular and programmatic changes collaboratively with education leaders and students, (3) developing, implementing, and managing systems for continuous quality improvement and program evaluation (e.g., MedHub) and (4) facilitating medical education research.
Goal
The goal of the Office of Assessment, Evaluation & Quality Improvement is to enhance the quality of undergraduate medical education in the College of Medicine through the development, implementation, and management of systems for student assessment and curriculum evaluation.
Medical Student & Curriculum Evaluation
Medical students evaluate courses, lecturers, activities, small group facilitators, faculty members, attending physicians, residents and peers (as team members) on a regular basis. A structured, feedback evaluation system is in place to ensure course objectives are taught and examined. Much of the evaluation data is collected through the electronic management system, MedHub. Both quantitative and qualitative comments are collected and analyzed by the Office of Assessment, Evaluation & Quality Improvement and then presented to course directors, faculty members and student members to improve the curriculum.
College of Medicine MedHub
Medhub is the COM preferred medical education evaluation management system which has been fully deployed in the institution’s medical school since 2020. The system has been used primarily to manage over 95,000 student, faculty, and course evaluations that are scheduled every academic year. The Office of Assessment, Evaluation & Quality Improvement oversees this system, tracks compliance of completed evaluations and pulls data reports from this system to assess outcomes.
Analysis of Internally Developed Assessments & Other Internally Developed Exams
Students are assessed in a variety of ways, including knowledge and clinical skills examinations. Assessments of knowledge occur by validated computerized exams, national standardized exams, small group facilitators, faculty members, attending physicians and residents, and trained Standardized Patients. Assessments of clinical skills occur in a variety of settings, including small groups, labs, as well as inpatient hospital and outpatient clinic settings. Self-assessments, Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCE), and assessments by faculty members, preceptors, and trained Standardized Patients (SP) are integrated throughout the curriculum. In addition, clinical competency exams (CCX 2 and CCX 3) are conducted in the Center for Clinical Assessment, Teaching, & Simulation (CCAT) to provide assessment and feedback to assist with student preparation for national board examinations. Many of the structured, active learning opportunities for clinical skills development and assessment occur in the CCAT and the Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety Center (CEPSC), commonly referred to as the Simulation Center. Much of the assessment data is collected and analyzed by the Office of Assessment, Evaluation & Quality Improvement.
Management of the Student Record Data Warehouse
The data warehouse contains confidential pre-matriculation data, records during medical school, and post-graduation data. Data includes the graduates from the class of 2005 through the current class. The variables in this data warehouse includes demographic information, MCAT Scores, undergraduate GPA, medical student outcomes/grades, USMLE scores and other assessment and evaluation data while students are in medical school. This data warehouse can be used to answer any questions related to medical education outcomes research that the Office of Assessment, Evaluation & Quality Improvement might conduct.
Statistical Consulting for Medical Education Studies
Faculty members are encouraged to conduct medical education research and studies in the College of Medicine. Interested faculty members are advised to contact the Office of Assessment, Evaluation & Quality Improvement for any services related to conducting this research and for the use of aggregate unidentified information from the Student Record Data Warehouse with the assistance of the Office of Assessment, Evaluation & Quality Improvement.
