Forensic psychiatry is the field of medicine focused on the intersection of mental health and the legal system.

The MUSC Forensic Psychiatry Program (FPP) provides assessment and consulting services to criminal and civil legal entities, supports the year-long forensic psychiatry and psychology fellowship training programs, and conducts forensic research.

FPP provides consulting services spanning the forensic field in such topics as competency to stand trial, criminal responsibility, capacity to conform behavior, mitigation, risk assessment, impact of traumatic brain injury, malpractice, standards of care, and guardianships & conservatorships.

By contract with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health Forensic Services Center, the CPSPD conducts the Competency to Stand Trial, Criminal Responsibility/Capacity to Conform adult and juvenile evaluations for fourteen counties in the Lowcountry region of the state.
