Dr. Boger Teaching Philosophy

I enjoy and have a true passion about teaching. My ability to teach and educate future health care professionals is one of the greatest gifts/talents that I received from my mother. She was able to connect with her students to teach them the way the students learned best. She didn’t conform to strict textbook teaching, rather she would come up with teaching strategies that would encourage and facilitate learning in ways for all to learn and excel. I feel I have been able to do the same, by connecting with the students and providing valuable resources to aide in their training, such as creating my own series of neuroanatomy dissection videos. Both students and faculty have acknowledged my teaching abilities and education resources as indicated by consistently receiving outstanding teaching evaluations. Since 2015, I have either been nominated or received Faculty Excellence Awards from the COM students. My impact on education has been recognized by students via PRAISE cards, MUSC COM Faculty Excellence Awards, and nominations for Golden Apple Excellence in Education at MUSC. In 2022 I was awarded an Osmosis Raise the Line Faculty Award for my role as a student advisor. This award is sponsored by Elsevier and recognizes inspirational educators.

I have a true passion for aging, human neuroscience, neuroanatomy, psychology, and related disorders. As the medical curriculum continues to evolve, I plan to continue to play an integral role by facilitating greater vertical integration between the pre-clinical and clinical years. Furthermore, I want to continue to develop and implement innovative educational tools to be used in future education models to better teach our students, with the goal of sharing the tools with others via publications. In summary, a primary career goal is that my effort and passion for teaching contribute to the personal and professional development of each student I have the privilege to teach.
