GME Spouse and Significant Other Organization

The MUSC Resident Spouses and Significant Others (SASO) group is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where spouses and significant others of all backgrounds, identities, and orientations feel valued and respected. We believe that each individual brings unique perspectives and experiences to our community, and we strive to support all.

The road to become an attending is tumultuous, being the spouse or significant other to these individuals is a unique and often challenging position. They face long hours, high levels of stress, navigate the complexities of the healthcare environment, all while trying to balance their life outside the hospital.

This makes us spouses and significant others invaluable to them, but what about us?

Having an organization dedicated to the spouses and significant others of residents serves as a crucial support system, providing a network of individuals who understand the specific challenges and can offer camaraderie, empathy, and resources. I was fortunate that my wife's medical school had one of these organizations, it proved to be vital to mental health and formed lifelong friendships.

MUSC having a similar organization was one of the many reasons we sought residency here. I am looking forward to building on the success of the MUSC SASO organization - organizing events, sharing advice on coping strategies, and fostering a sense of community that helps mitigate the isolation and stress that can come with being connected to the medical field.
