Application Process

Application Information

The MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program serves as a national leader in Family Medicine and provides well-trained physicians to needed communities.

Application Process

We use the ERAS System to receive applications. For your application to be complete, it must contain the following:

  • Dean's Letter
  • Transcript
  • Minimum USMLE Step 2 CK score of 220 or COMLEX 2 score of 450
  • 3 letters of recommendation

The Resident Selection Committee screens the completed applications and invites applicants for an interview. Prompt invitations to interview will be offered in the following order:

  • Applicants indicating a program signal
  • Applicants of US medical schools indicating a geographic signal
  • Applicants of non-US medical schools indicating a geographic signal

Applications that are delayed or do not contain a program or geographic signal will not be considered. Additionally, we do not consider applicants who are greater than 2 years removed from medical school graduation or clinical practice.

At this time, our program is unable to sponsor visas.

Interview & Selection Process

Interviews will be virtual. For students who wish to visit the area, we are happy to facilitate tours of our facilities and time with our current residents during your time in Charleston.

Our interviewing process is designed to make the selection process a fair and enriching experience. Interviewers are provided the information stated in the application and impressions are recorded by each interviewer. In January, these reports and the required information are studied carefully by the Resident Selection Committee and used to rank applicants for the National Resident Matching Program.

Please note that we perform holistic review on all applications. As such, our application review process takes extensive time and offers for interviews may be delayed. Please do not interpret a delay in extension of an interview offer as a lack of interest, but instead as a commitment to our holistic review process. All applications are generally reviewed within 3 weeks of submission.

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) developed ERAS®-the Electronic Residency Application Service, to transmit residency applications, letters of recommendation, Dean's Letters, transcripts, and other supporting credentials from applicants and medical schools to residency program directors using the Internet. For more information, please visit the ERAS website.
