Research Interests:

Dr. Obeid is the Co-director of the Biomedical Informatics Center (BMIC) and SmartState Endowed Chair in Biomedical Informatics at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). He received his MD from the American University of Beirut. Following his residency in Pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center and Pediatric Endocrinology fellowship at Weill-Cornell, he received further training in Medical Informatics at the Division of Health Sciences and Technology, a joint Harvard-MIT fellowship program.

As co-director of BMIC, he oversees several academic and operational informatics initiatives. He leads the effort on multiple Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Informatics projects such as, the Electronic Health Records (EHR) Research Data Warehouse (RDW), i2b2, REDCap, Profiles research networking system, and many others. Since his arrival at MUSC he has served as principal investigator, co-investigator and informatics leader on several federally funded projects. He is also the Principal Investigator on the IRB protocols for the use of the EHR data for research, both at MUSC and statewide through Health Sciences South Carolina. At the national level, he led several working groups related to translational research informatics. Dr. Obeid is the founder and director of two courses in Biomedical Informatics, and the co-founder of the AI Hub at MUSC.

His research interests include: natural language processing (NLP) using deep learning approaches for e-phenotyping and prediction of outcomes; electronic consents and research permissions; secondary use of EHR data/data warehousing for research; analysis of research networks; and biomedical ontologies.
