Message from the Residency Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). With a longstanding tradition of training outstanding physicians, we are fully committed to continuing that legacy. Our educational program is challenging, supportive, flexible, and tailored to meet the needs of each individual trainee.

The cornerstone of any excellent training program is the strength of its residents and faculty. We are fortunate to have outstanding residents who are bright, compassionate, professional, and highly supportive of one another. They bring a range of backgrounds and perspectives, excelling both individually and as a team. Our residents actively contribute to curriculum development and service design. The Department of Medicine’s innovative and collaborative faculty are committed to teaching in clinics, on wards, and through educational conferences. As leaders in research, education, and clinical care, they view residents as junior colleagues, fostering a supportive and approachable learning environment.

Another strength of our program is the remarkable range of patients we serve. Our residents provide primary care for a significant portion of the South Carolina lowcountry population as part of our level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home. MUSC also serves as the tertiary referral center for the entire state. This balance of ambulatory and inpatient training experiences ensures that our graduates are equally well-prepared to practice in primary care, hospital medicine, or to pursue further training as subspecialists.
