On-Demand Viewing Coming Soon

Join us as we host Dr. Susan Swedo, Scientists Emerita, as she reviews the history of the discovery of PANDAS and development of PANS, focusing on the clinical features that distinguish these cases from other presentations of pediatric OCD. She will then present a summary of the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of PANS/PANDAS before concluding with a discussion of research findings related to etiology and disease mechanisms.

Dr. Susan Swedo is currently a Scientist Emerita of the National Institutes of Health. She received her B.A. degree from Augustana College in 1977 and her M.D. from Southern Illinois University in 1980. Shortly after completing a residency in pediatrics at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Swedo was named Chief of the Division of Adolescent Medicine at the University. The following year, she moved to Washington D.C. and became a senior staff fellow in the Child Psychiatry Branch, NIMH. Dr. Swedo was granted tenure in 1992, became Head of the Section on Behavioral Pediatrics in 1994, and Chief of the Pediatrics and Developmental Neuropsychiatry Branch in 1998. She also served as the Acting Scientific Director for NIMH from 1995 through 1998. After publishing more than 150 papers, numerous chapters and two trade books, Dr. Swedo retired from the NIH in 2019. She currently serves as the Chief Scientific Officer for the PANDAS Physicians Network and chairs the Professional Advisory Board for the Alliance to Solve Pediatric Infection-Related Encephalopathies (ASPIRE), as well as seeing patients in a multi-disciplinary consultative practice in Bethesda, Maryland.

2. The relationship of PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) to PANDAS will be discussed, and draft diagnostic criteria for PANS will be presented.
3. Participants will be able to list the diagnostic tests that are useful in evaluating acute-onset OCD.
4. Treatment guidelines for PANS/PANDAS will be presented and participants will be informed of on-line resources for case management.
