Charleston Teen & Family EMPOWERR Program

Founded in 2008, the EMPOWERR Program is located within the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center, a division of MUSC's Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. EMPOWERR is funded by a 5-year MAI grant through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Mission

EMPOWERR's mission is to reduce the onset of substance use, prevent the transmission of HIV, Hepatitis, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and decrease unintended pregnancies among youth and young adults in the Charleston area who face greater health risks.

Goals & Objectives

Our goals are to provide comprehensive, evidence based HIV, STI, and unplanned pregnancy prevention programs to area teens and young adults; increase youth access to HIV and STI testing through coordinating and participating in large scale testing events; and to educate the greater public through attendance at community health fairs, outreach events, and on social media.

What We Do

Evidence-Based Prevention & Treatment Programming

For more detailed information about our services, please see our Prevention Programming and Substance Use Treatment pages.

Community Outreach

There are many ways that EMPOWERR gets involved with our community. You can find us tabling in Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley counties with a plethora of resources, information, and games. We table at high school cafeterias, school district events, and community programming to normalize talking about adolescent health.

Throughout the year, our Health Educator is providing evidence-based programming in schools, with the Department of Juvenile Justice, at group homes, in libraries, with summer camps, and so much more. To make EMPOWERR as accessible as possible, we offer transportation for adolescents and caregivers that need assistance making it to our programs. For those who are unable to attend our programming, we also have active social media accounts that deliver skills, information, and guidance to adolescents. Follow EMPOWERR's Instagram page for teen-friendly resources.

Training/Professional Development

EMPOWERR provides training and professional development to youth-serving professional in the Charleston area including Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for adolescents, Motivational Interviewing, and training in evidence-based curricula and best practices

We also facilitate programming for caregivers and other safe adults of teens through our caregiver education program titled "Sex, Substances, and Social Media- Supporting Teens through the 3 S's of Risk-taking Behaviors"

If you would like EMPOWERR to provide a training to your team or caregivers in your community, fill our our request for services form.

Finding Identity & Relationship enhancement to Reduce Exploitation (FIRRE)

When we aren't implementing evidence-based curricula, we are creating it. EMPOWERR is collaborating with local nonprofits, state agencies, and field experts to create FIRRE, an educational and skills-building risk-reduction group. The curriculum was created in collaboration with mental health clinicians, health educators, nurse practitioners, and trafficking-survivor/lived experience experts. The purpose of FIRRE is to provide valuable information and resources to teens and caregivers in our community, with a focus on commercial sexual exploitation prevention. To learn more, please email us at EMPOWERR@musc.edu. To sign up or refer someone to FIRRE, fill out our referral form
