Dr Mallah

Mike M. Mallah, M.D. joins the MUSC Department of Surgery as an Assistant Professor, effective October 1. Dr. Mallah is a trauma surgeon who is double board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care and cares for patients who have suffered from traumatic injuries or are in need of emergency general surgery and intensive care. His passion for his practice and his patients is rooted in a traumatic medical experience he and his family experienced during his childhood.

Dr. Mallah earned an undergraduate degree in Biology with a Chemistry minor and his medical degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then completed a five-year General Surgery Residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, the busiest Level I Trauma Center in the state, where he logged over 1,300 operative cases. Finally, Dr. Mallah elected to pursue additional professional training by completing a Trauma/Surgical Critical Care fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Level I Trauma Center in Richmond, VA, where he cared for acutely ill and injured patients.

During his medical and surgical training, Dr. Mallah spent approximately three years in international healthcare consulting at McKinsey & Company. In this role, he worked with the C-suite of multiple institutions and government Health Ministers to solve complex international healthcare problems.

Dr. Mallah has a strong interest in global surgery and surgical education. He has operated on five continents and traveled to over 45 countries. Not only did this work expose him to pathology and surgical technique not often seen or practiced in the United States, but it also allowed him to gain an understanding about barriers and lack of access to safe surgical and anesthesia care.

He has published articles in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the General Surgery News, and presented at several regional, national, and international conferences, including chapters of the American College of Surgeons and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma.

Aside from certification from the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Mallah has certification and course training in Robotic Surgery, Advanced Burn Life Support, Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma, Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Trauma Operative Management, Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Mallah enjoys running, scuba diving, caring for his family, and global travel with cultural immersion.
