Kevin Roggin, M.D. Joins MUSC; Named Surgical Oncology Division Chief

The MUSC Department of Surgery is excited to announce that Kevin Roggin, M.D., has been named the new Chief of Surgical Oncology, effective September 1, 2023. Dr. Roggin is a distinguished surgical oncologist, scholar, and educator, having served at the University of Chicago Medicine Center (UCMC) for the past 17 years. He began his career at UCMC as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in 2005, following the completion of a fellowship in surgical oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. While at UCMC, Dr. Roggin rose to the rank of Professor of Surgery and Cancer Research. 

At MUSC, Dr. Roggin will enhance the division’s clinical programs, creating collaborative, multidisciplinary approaches to liver, pancreas, and biliary disease and expanding the HIPEC, endocrine, and breast programs. He will also serve as Clinical Director for Surgical Oncology at the Hollings Cancer Center, working closely with the Hollings ICCE leadership to grow these key clinical areas. Read more.

Ruddy, M.D. Named Vice Chair of Research 

Jean Ruddy MD

The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce Jean Marie Ruddy, M.D., Associate Professor of Vascular Surgery, has been named the new Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Surgery. Since 2021, Dr. Ruddy has served as the Associate Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Ruddy's passion and dedication to research and education will be instrumental to her leading and growing the Research Division. She served the Department as the Associate Program Director for Resident Research in General Surgery, where she transformed resident research into a high-functioning enterprise creating a meaningful and productive experience for each resident in the program.

The Department thanks Michael J. Yost, Ph.D., Vice Chair of Research, for his many years of service, dedication, and leadership and for his substantial contributions to the field of biomedical engineering.

Annual Awards Ceremony Honors Trainees and Faculty 

The Department of Surgery recognized our exceptional faculty and trainees for their outstanding educational achievements, patient care, and research at the annual awards ceremony. A total of  xx awards were prestented, reconginzing excellence in patient care, education,  research, professionalism, and leadership. 

We were honored to have Patrick J. O'Neill, M.D., Affiliate Associate Professor of Surgery, present our Awards Ceremony Lecture. Dr. O'Neill provided an insightful and inspiring talk "Heroes and Antiheroes."

Shikhar Mehrotra, Ph.D. Receives Blue Sky Award

Shikhar Mehrotra, Ph.D. received a Blue Sky Award for his research: VDAC as a Single Target to Control Mitochondrial Metabolism and Enhance Cytotoxicity in T cellThe MUSC Office of the Vice President for Research in partnership with the Office of Innovation invites applications for promising high-risk research that tackles big problems in medicine and science. The Blue Sky Award provides support for highly creative faculty with a track record of outstanding success with the opportunity to test the feasibility of their “grand idea” and prepare that idea for an application for extramural funding. 

Arman Kilic M.D. Recieves Inaugural Prager Scholarship 

Arman Kilic, M.D. received the Michigan Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (MSTCVS) Quality Collaborative inaugural Prager Scholarship. The scholarship supports a faculty member interested in building a regional quality collaborative in cardiac and/or general thoracic surgery. Dr. Kilic will meet one on one with executives from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the leadership of the Adult Cardiac, Structural Heart, and Thoracic Collaboratives in Michigan, and the Michigan team members to understand how the Collaborative was built, how it is funded, and how they have made a positive impact in surgical outcomes in their state. This experience will be invaluable as Dr. Kilic applies the knowledge learned from the Michigan experience in working to build a similar collaborative in South Carolina.

Diversity and Inclusion News 

Sharee Wright, M.D. completed the yearlong Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program hosted by the Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at MUSC and the Center for Transformation and Change. Keller Lee, Fiscal Analyst, was accepted into the Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program hosted by the Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at MUSC and the Center for Transformation and Change.Sharee Wright, M.D. completed the yearlong Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program hosted by the Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at MUSC and the Center for Transformation and Change.
