Dr. Baliga named vice president of Halsted

We are pleased to announce that MUSC Department of Surgery Chair Prabhakar Baliga, M.D., was selected as the Vice President and President-Elect of the Halsted Society during the 98th Annual Halsted Society Meeting. The Halsted Society is one of the most prestigious surgical societies in the country. It aims to further scientific principles and encourage collaboration among its members, who are pillars of the surgical community and have reached the pinnacle of their success. The Society honors William Stewart Halsted, M.D., an American pioneer of scientific surgery who was an early champion of anesthetics, introduced new operations, and established the first surgical school in the United States.

Baliga’s subsequent role as President of the Halsted Society will occur during a significant milestone for the Halsted Society. He will preside over the Society’s centennial celebrations during the 100th Annual Meeting, which will be held in Boston, sponsored by the Massachusetts General /Brigham Hospital in 2026.

“I am extremely humbled to have been selected as President-Elect,” said Baliga. “It is a tremendous honor that I believe is a testament to MUSC’s exceptional surgical programs and leaders.”

Each year, different surgical programs host the Halsted Society Meeting, providing an opportunity for host institutions to showcase their clinical and research expertise and introduce their up-and-coming faculty to leaders in their field. Halsted Society members also look forward to enjoying collegial time together after the daily scientific sessions, creating bonds among surgical leaders across disciplines.

MUSC was honored to be a host institution in 2019. When Baliga was appointed chair of the Department of Surgery in 2015, he aspired to raise the department to a nationally recognized department of surgical excellence. “I’m proud that the MUSC Department of Surgery was able to host the Halsted Meeting 2019,” said Baliga. “I think it made a significant impression on the members and was a milestone in strengthening the national recognition of MUSC and our Department of Surgery.”
