Laura Hollinger, M.D., associate professor of pediatric surgery, has been named the Secretary of the MUSC Medical Staff Medical Executive Committee (MEC), a vital governing body that ensures the medical staff operates efficiently, aligns with MUSC’s mission, and upholds the highest patient care and safety standards. MEC is instrumental in fostering a collaborative environment across MUSC’s medical and administrative leadership.

Officers of MEC represent and act on behalf of the medical staff to guide and govern the clinical operations of the institution. The MEC ensures high-quality cost-effective patient care across the continuum of the medical center and integrates the hospital’s medical staff within the broader academic healthcare system.

“MEC plays a pivotal role in promoting patient safety and improving the quality of care,” said Hollinger. “We are tasked with reviewing clinical policies and procedures, medical staff bylaws, and overseeing committees related to the medical staff, such as credentialing. The MEC serves as the liaison between the medical staff and hospital administration, ensuring that the needs and concerns of the medical professionals are communicated and addressed while supporting the organization’s broader goals.” She says she looks forward to representing and advocating for fellow medical staff members.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Hollinger take on this important leadership role,” said Prabhakar Baliga, M.D., Chair of the Department of Surgery. “Her dedication to patient care, her collaborative spirit, and her role as medical director of the Pediatric ECMO Program at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital, which under her leadership has received ELSO designated Platinum-level status, make her well qualified to contribute to the Medical Executive Committee. I have full confidence that she will bring great insight and energy to this position, strengthening our medical staff and enhancing the quality of care across MUSC.”

Hollinger will serve for six years and progress through officer roles, including Vice President and President. As Secretary, she will work with Libby Infinger, M.D., MPH, who currently serves as Vice President, and Mark Heincelman, M.D., MPH, who serves as President.

“It is a privilege to assume this leadership role that can help shape and change daily healthcare practices within MUSC,” she said.
