Arman Kilic M.D. Joins the Department of Surgery

Arman Kilic, M.D. joins the MUSC Department of Surgery as an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and will serve MUSC Health as the Director of the Heart Failure and Heart Transplant Program, effective March 15, 2021. Prior to joining MUSC, Dr. Kilic served as the Associate Director for the Advanced Heart Failure Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).  He also held leadership roles at UPMC as Director of Surgical Quality and Analytics in Cardiac Surgery and Co-director of the Center for Cardiovascular Outcomes and Innovation.

Dr. Kilic has a long-standing clinical interest in coronary bypass surgery, valve surgery, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support.  His primary academic interests are focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), predictive analytics, and using big data and large multicenter clinical registries for outcomes research, risk modeling, and clinical trials. His work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Thoracic Surgery Foundation.  In 2020, Dr. Kilic’s research was recognized with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons President’s Award.

A prolific author and speaker, Dr. Kilic has over 250 peer-reviewed publications and has served as editor of multiple major textbooks.  He is a regularly invited national and international speaker.  He serves on numerous committees, task forces, and editorial boards, including the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Cardiac Surgery, PLOS ONE, and the Journal of Thoracic Disease. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology. 

Dr. Kilic received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency and a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He then completed a cardiac surgery fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
