Awards and Recognitions for the Month of September

The following faculty, staff and residents have distinguished themselves over the past month:

  • Christian Streck, M.D. was named Chair to the American Pediatric Surgical Association Trauma Committee for a two year term.
  • Hongjun Wang, Ph.D. received a Notification of Award from the NIHNIDDK for a $3.2M grant over five years for her research project" Autologous BM-MSCs and Islet Co-transplantation to Enhance Islet Survival and Function in TP-IAT Patients"
  • T. Konrad Rajab, M.D., Jennie Kwon, M.D. PGY- research and medical student Morgan Hill submitted a Record of Invention to the MUSC Foundation for Research Development for their invention of an automatic pump for sustained local antibiotic delivery directly to a surgical wound as opposed to conventional oral or intravenous antibiotics.
  • SC Human-Centered Design Program Start-Up Heartbeat Technologies was selected to participate in the XLerateHealth12-week accelerator program and was highlighted in their newsletter.
  • Kristen Quinn, MD PGY-research is the founder and CEO of Heartbeat Technologies.
  • Jessica Belger, administrative assistant in Department of Surgery Human Resources, received the W.O.W. Award, given quarterly to a staff member who has distinguished themselves in the workplace.
  • Jessica Douglas, administrative assistant in the division of Transplant Surgery, named to the MUSC Safe Zone Advisory Council.

Ravi Veeraswamy, M.D. Named Elliott Robison Endowed Chair

Ravi Veeraswamy, M.D. was recently named the inaugural chair-holder of the Elliott-Robison Endowed Chair in Vascular Surgery. An endowed chair is the highest academic award that a university can bestow on a faculty member. It is both an honor to Dr. Veeraswamy and also an enduring tribute to the legacies of vascular surgeons Dr. Bruce Elliott and Dr. Jay Robison. We congratulate Dr. Veeraswamy on the tremendous honor and thank all of the generous donors who made this Endowed Chair possible.

Women in Medicine Month

Each September, the American Medical Association (AMA) marks Women in Medicine Month to honor physicians who have offered their time, wisdom and support to advance women with careers in medicine.

Jean Marie Ruddy, M.D. Accepted into NIH Proposal Academy

Jean Marie Ruddy, M.D. was accepted into the NIH Proposal Academy for the 2021-22 academic year. The NIH Proposal Academy is run by the Delaware Center for Translation Research, Accelerating Clinical and Translational Research Program (CTR ACCEL). The program, which is designed for new or early-career investigators, is a year-long program that includes an individually-assigned science mentor for every participant, and provides general coaching, proposal preparation/grantsmanship skills, and grant editing and graphics assistance.
