Matteo Trezzi MD

Dr. Matteo Trezzi is a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in congenital heart surgery. Born in Milan, Italy, Dr. Trezzi graduated from medical school at the University of Milan. He completed his post-graduate training in cardiac surgery from the same institution. Later, he acquired his 3-year fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (Cleveland, OH). Additionally, he completed a 2-year fellowship in pediatric cardiac surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston, SC). He was then recruited as an attending surgeon at the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital of Rome (Italy) at the Holy See.

Dr. Trezzi’s clinical interests include neonatal and infant heart surgery, hybrid interventions, high-risk re-operations, adult congenital surgery, tracheal surgery, and heart/lung transplantation. Specifically, he has accumulated a valuable experience in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), durable mechanical circulatory support devices, correction of anomalies of the pulmonary venous return, and aortic arch surgery. Dr. Trezzi has given presentations at various national and regional meetings. Also, he has authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Furthermore, his research activities include pediatric heart failure, evaluation of new mechanical circulatory support devices, percutaneous devices for right ventricular failure, heart valve repair and replacement, introduction in clinical practice of new organ preservation systems for transplantation, and outcomes improvement.

He considers himself extremely fortunate and blessed to continue this work at MUSC. Besides his professional engagements, Dr. Trezzi enjoys spending time with his lovely wife and two beautiful kids - an active family that loves the outdoors.
