MUSC had the second most kidney transplant waitlist additions in calendar year 2021, significantly increasing African American representation and patients from communities of low socioeconomic status.

Specializing in adult kidney and pancreas transplantation, Dr. Casey’s interests include novel work in immunosuppression maintenance after transplant failure to improve a patient's chance for re-transplantation. He serves on the American Society of Transplantation’s Kidney Pancreas Community of Practice (KPCOP) ‘Kidney Recipients with Allograft Failure—Transition of Care’ (KRAFT) workgroup. Dr. Casey also served on the OPTN Kidney Paired Donation Workgroup which advised on national kidney paired donation policy. His other interests include transplant immunosuppression and post-transplant outcomes research which he has presented at numerous national and international transplant conferences. Dr. Casey is board-certified in nephrology and internal medicine, and he is a member of the American Society of Transplantation and American Society of Nephrology.

Dr. Casey was recruited to join the MUSC Divisions of Nephrology and Transplant Surgery as Associate Professor in 2018. He attended medical school at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he was awarded a student research grant in neurobiology and several other student honors. After medical school, he completed his internal medicine residency at California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco, and subsequently his nephrology fellowship at Stanford University. After completing his transplant nephrology fellowship at California Pacific Medical Center, Dr. Casey served on the academic faculty at the University of Florida where he also earned a master's degree in Clinical and Translational Science.
