Renowned GI Motility Expert Dr. Amol Sharma Joins MUSC

The MUSC Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is thrilled to welcome Amol Sharma, M.D., MSc, FACG, AGAF, a distinguished physician-scientist and leader in Neurogastroenterology and GI Motility (NGM), who joined our faculty in March 2025. Dr. Sharma, renowned for clinical excellence, innovative research, and mentorship, brings extensive expertise in advancing patient care, clinical research, and education in this rapidly evolving field.

Before joining MUSC, Dr. Sharma spent a decade at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), where he established and led a highly productive, NIH-funded re¬search program focused on diabetic gastroparesis, neuroenteric dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease, and gut-brain interactions in motility disorders. His groundbreaking studies on neuromodulation, gut physiology, and novel therapeutic interventions have contributed to cutting-edge treatments for conditions such as chronic idiopathic constipation, fecal incontinence, and visceral pain syndromes. As a principal and co-investigator in multiple NIH, foundation and industry-sponsored clinical trials, Dr. Sharma has played a pivotal role in shaping emerging therapies for complex motility disorders.

In addition to his research, Dr. Sharma is a dedicated clinician, who provides compassionate. comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for patients with severe motility disorders, includingachalasia, refractory constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). His collaborative, patient-centric approach integrates pharmacologic, surgical, and neuromodulation therapies, ensuring the most advanced and personalized treatment plans.

Dr. Sharma has also demonstrated exceptional leadership in clinical care, informatics, and medical education. As Medical Director and Physician Informaticist for Gastroenterology at Augusta University Medical Center, he led efforts to enhance clinical technology and patient-centered care delivery. His commitment to academic excellence is evident in his extensive mentorship of GI fellows, international postdoctoral researchers, and trainees, as well as contributions to faculty development and promotion.

Beyond his institutional leadership, Dr. Sharma is a recognized leader at the national level, actively contributing to the American Neurogastroenterology & Motility Society (ANMS), American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), and the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). As a sought-after speaker, advisor, journal editorial board member, and course director, he has played a critical role in shaping multiple successful educational initiatives in various formats.

With his cutting-edge research, clinical expertise, and dedication to advancing the field, Dr. Sharma is an invaluable addition to our division. We are excited to welcome him to MUSC and look forward to the impact he will continue to have on our patients, research initiatives, and educational programs.
