Clinical Experience

MUSC Children’s Health serves as the comprehensive regional pediatric quaternary hospital for Charleston and the surrounding area. The Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital opened in February 2020 and has 250 beds. It is South Carolina’s only 24/7 full-service Emergency Department, Level 1 Trauma Center, and Pediatric Burn Center.

• Annual census >35,000 visits/year
• Ranked in the top 10 among peer Children’s hospitals for case variety and acuity
• Average admission rate of 21%, higher than the national average
• 450-500 procedural sedations annually
• Moonlighting opportunities at one of three pediatric urgent care clinics which see an additional 30,000 visits/year
• 20 bed unit including two large resuscitation bays and dedicated rooms for orthopedic, ophthalmologic, psychiatric, and sexual assault complaints
• Ability to flex into an additional 6-8 beds during high census times
• Resuscitation bays equipped with video recording capabilities for educational purposes
