Description

The Summer Medicine Academy is a one-week residential program jointly sponsored by the South Carolina Area Health and Education Consortium (AHEC) and the College of Medicine. Fifteen (15) Academy Fellows take part in a week of clinical and didactic sessions on the campus of MUSC, a shadowing experience, as well as a community service project. Didactic sessions and project topics focus on understanding the many different health needs and health disparities of communities across South Carolina.

The program is open to all students who are interested in learning about the various factors that affect health in South Carolina communities. First-generation college students, students from rural and urban communities, students with disabilities, and student who have overcome financial barriers to education are encouraged to apply.

Objectives

  1. To equip students with the foundational knowledge and skills needed for entry into health professions programs in South Carolina.
  2. To build a future workforce with an understanding of the unique health needs and challenges faced by various communities within South Carolina and to inspire a commitment to providing high-quality healthcare to all residents.
  3. To encourage and support students in their consideration of practicing in medically underserved communities across South Carolina where their skills and services are most needed, thereby improving healthcare access and outcomes for all populations in the state.

Dates

Dates for the 2025 Summer Careers Academy are Monday, June 9, to Friday, June 13, 2025.

Applications

Applications are now open for Spring 2025. Students must be 18 years of age on or before June 1 of the program year.
