Categorical Pediatric Residency Curriculum

Clinical

Even with over 80 years of experience training pediatricians, we continue to refine and optimize our clinical curriculum based on resident input. This is especially important in a world where the policies of residency governing bodies change frequently. Because of this continued pursuit of excellence, our graduates are more than prepared for careers in general practice or fellowship.

Intern Year

First year residents spend either seven or eight blocks on inpatient services, three blocks in an ambulatory setting, and either two or three blocks in elective time. After discussion as a program, residents have opted to transition from 24 hour “calls” for interns during general wards to a night float system during their wards blocks (usually 5-6 nights per block). Our residents are offered the flexibility of choosing to do two inpatient Cardiology months during their intern year or two inpatient Hematology-Oncology months with one occurring in the first year and one occurring in the second year.

Second Year

Second year residents have six or seven blocks of inpatient care, one ambulatory, and five or six blocks as electives. Rotations through the pediatric intensive care unit begin this year and have recently transitioned to a night float system where each resident takes on average 6 nights during their month. On upper level wards blocks, residents have two or three 24-hour-calls. Night blocks are divided into two week stretches for a total of four weeks with half spent on the general pediatric wards and the other half spent on the hematology/oncology and cardiology night team.

Third Year

The final year of residency is a time to focus on specific interests with the individualized curriculum. Four blocks are reserved for electives, one block on inpatient wards, and three dedicated to an ambulatory setting. Again, on the upper level wards block, residents have two or three 24 hours calls, but nights are otherwise covered with a night float system.

Individualized Curriculum

The ability to create electives such as research time, following respiratory therapy, transport team, etc. to meet your professional goals can be discussed with program leadership.
