Lectureships and Special Events

A Department of Surgery lecture

Throughout the course of the year, the Education Division hosts an array of Named Lectureships, delivered by nationally recognized experts in their respective field, and Invited Guest Lecturers from outside institutions.

Horace G. Smithy Lecture

The Horace G. Smithy Lectureship honors Dr. Smithy, a pioneer in the early days of cardiac surgery. Dr. Smithy was a young Assistant Professor of Surgery at MUSC who made medical history by successfully removing scar tissue from a heart valve of a young, incapacitated girl who had been given but a brief time to live.

Kredel-Springs Lecture

The Kredel-Springs Lectureship honors Frederick E. Kredel, M.D. and Holmes B. Springs, M.D. for their contributions and personal dedication to resident education and continuing medical education. The Lectureship is made possible through an endowment created by donations from the Kredel and Springs families, colleagues and the Department of Surgery.

Marion C. Anderson, M.D. Lecture

The Marion C. Anderson, M.D. Lectureship honors Dr. Anderson for his contributions to the field of gastrointestinal and pancreatic surgery and his personal dedication to resident education and continuing medical education.  The Lectureship is made possible through an endowment created by donations from Dr. Anderson’s daughters, colleagues and the Department of Surgery.

Eric R. Frykberg, M.D. Lecture

In 2016, in honor of Dr. Eric Frykberg, an MUSC Surgical alumnus who built a brilliant and productive career that has made the practice of Surgery safer, better, and smarter, the MUSC Department of Surgery was honored to have the opportunity to dedicate Surgery Research Day in Dr. Frykberg’s memory. The Eric R. Frykberg Memorial Lectureship Fund is established in support of surgical education in the MUSC Department of Surgery.
