The long-term goal of the Nowling lab is to identify drugable targets and potential therapeutic approaches that can be translated to patient care in the area of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE or lupus), using human samples and pre-clinical mouse models of disease in our studies. Specifically, the lab is focused on investigating the pathophysiological effects of elevated renal glycosphingolipid metabolism in progression and sex bias of disease, relevance of glycosphingolipids in urine exosomes as biomarkers of disease flare and response to therapy, and targeting glycosphingolipid metabolism as a potential therapeutic approach to treating disease.
