Global Health

Thank you for your interest in Global Health! For a comprehensive review of Global Health opportunities at MUSC, please see the Global Health website.

MUSC’s Internal Medicine program also offers a rotation in Global Health through a partnership with OneWorld Health. Please see below for further information.

Overview of the rotation, Global Health in Internal Medicine (GHIM):

Aim:

Global Health in Internal Medicine (GHIM) partners with OneWorld Health to provide funding for internal medicine residents to travel to one of three predetermined sites (Uganda, Burundi, or Nicaragua) for a two-week period to volunteer in clinics serving the local community and to participate in community outreach health events.

How to Apply?

GHIM participants must be a rising PGY2, PGY3, PGY4 or PGY 5 internal medicine residents who are in good standing and receive approval from the Program Director.

Application deadlines vary depending on the date of the trip.

If selected by the Internal Medicine review committee, residents will then apply to OneWorld Health for final approval. The OneWorld Health application deadline is published on their website.

Scholarship:

GHIM awards up to four scholarships per academic year to internal medicine residents. The scholarship awarded will be $2500 per person. This will cover salary and benefits for the 14 days the resident will be abroad. The remainder of the cost of travel expenses/lodging/flight/etc. will be the responsibility of the resident; however, OneWorld Health has numerous fundraising activities to help raise the appropriate funds.
