Matthew Gibson, M.D. joins MUSC Division of Vascular Surgery as assistant professor of Vascular Surgery, effective September 1, 2021. Dr. Gibson has practice locations in Murrells Inlet and Georgetown, South Carolina.  His primary clinical interests are treating patients with peripheral artery disease, surgical hemodialysis access creation and maintenance, endovascular treatments of arteries and veins including stent placement, management of carotid artery disease, and treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms.  He is also certified by ARDMS for the interpretation of non-invasive vascular ultrasound studies.  

Prior to joining MUSC, Dr. Gibson was in private practice with Rex Vascular Specialists at UNC Rex Healthcare in Raleigh, NC. He practices all aspects of vascular surgery, with special interests in peripheral artery disease, angiography, carotid artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysms, mesenteric artery disease, arterial bypass, vascular graft infections, hemodialysis access, diabetic foot infections, varicose veins, artery and vein stenting, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and arterial thromboembolism.

Dr. Gibson graduated from the MUSC Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency program and he received his medical degree from the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, MN. His undergraduate education was completed at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN; he graduated magna cum laude in 2009 with a double major in biomedical engineering and mathematics.

He is a member of the American Medical Association and the Vascular and Endovascular Surgical Society and is a Candidate Member of the Society of Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Gibson is Board Certified in Vascular Surgery and received the Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation® (RPVI®)  credential from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography®.
