Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity is having a seat at the table, inclusion is having a voice, and belonging is having that voice be heard.
-Liz Fosslien

At the Medical University of South Carolina, both the institutional and departmental mission is to welcome and celebrate, across different domains, including, but not limited to gender reassignment, age, maternity and pregnancy, ethnicity, religion, sex, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability, marriage, and civil partnership.

Therefore, we strongly encourage applications from minority candidates who are underrepresented in radiology, including women, racial and ethnic minorities, and LGBTQ medical students.

Our goal is to embrace a radiology residency program that promotes diversity and inclusion, in areas of recruitment, teaching, and patient care. With this intention, we aim to increase the diversity within residents, fellows, faculty and staff. In the confidence that, as a program, we will promote an educational environment rooted in communication, collaboration and collegiality. This in turn, will allow people to understand and be understood, and work together to change what's possible.

Furthermore, our radiology residency program fosters a culture of openness and nondiscrimination. We do not tolerate or accept religious discrimination, sexism, systemic racism, xenophobia, prejudice based on gender reassignment/identity or sexual orientation, and all other forms of exclusion.

We encourage applicants who are underrepresented in medicine, who are interested in radiology and would love to do a fourth year away rotation to apply for the visiting student rotation program, which provides financial assistance for educational related expense. For more information visit our Diversity and Inclusion site and Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Student Program.

Diversity Hangouts

Underrepresented in medicine applicants to all residency and fellowship programs are invited to attend the Diversity Virtual Hangouts hosted by diverse residents and fellows throughout the COM. These meetings allow for informal discussion about life at MUSC and in Charleston and are NOT program/department specific. RSVP is required; attendees will receive a Zoom link to the virtual meeting after RSVP.
