Get Involved

We are working harder than ever to increase representation in the College of Medicine, and to support individuals while they advance in their medical careers. Connecting current and potential students with Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) alumni is an important way in which we can support students.

Alumni are encouraged to become engaged in a number of ways:

Student Shadowing

Clinical experiences are increasingly important for medical school applicants, and some students have limited opportunities to shadow a physician in their community. Can you invite an aspiring student into your practice? Please reach out to the COM PRIME team if you'd like to open your practice to students.

Interview Applicants

It is important that applicants meet faculty and alumni who wholly reflect our institution and its values during the interview process, and we seek to broaden our admissions interviewer pool. Are you interested in interviewing applicants in your area? Email the COM Admissions team.

Preceptors

Do you remember the teacher who confirmed your passion for your specialty? You could be that person for 3rd or 4th year medical students. Preceptors hold an MUSC AHEC Volunteer faculty appointment and have access to the MUSC online library, and new CMS guidelines permit student documentation to be utilized for billing, allowing for greater student engagement and education. A S.C. state tax benefit is also available to preceptors who teach without compensation. We utilize community preceptors for clerkships in family medicine, ambulatory internal medicine, and pediatrics. Are you interested in serving as a preceptor?

Financial Giving

Medical student debt is at an all-time high, averaging $200,000 nationally. Students are understandably attracted to institutions that offer significant financial support.  Efforts to establish more scholarships for students are ongoing at MUSC. Are you able to contribute to a scholarship? For more information about giving to College of Medicine efforts, please contact the College of Medicine Development Office at 843-792-9243.
