In 2003 the College of Medicine launched a major recruitment effort for under-represented in medicine (URM) residents. That effort, which involved the Graduate Medical Education office and multiple directors and faculty, has been successful: in the last 10 years, the percentage of URM residents has more than tripled (3 percent to over 9 percent). 

The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery applauds this effort and is proud to have participated (see below – “URM Opportunities”). Our Department also supports the College’s ongoing efforts to promote cultural understanding and cultural competency, and to mentor URM residents and fellows. 

URM Opportunities
The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery has initiated a scholarship program for URM fourth year medical students from outside institutions applying for an elective rotation in our Department. The scholarship provides a $1,000 stipend to help defray costs of moving and staying in Charleston for the month.

In addition to the regular application process for the elective rotation, a one-page summary of future career plans is requested.
