Our Mission

  • To provide a community for the female faculty and residents of the Department of Surgery who share the similar obstacle of being in a traditionally male-dominated profession.
  • To provide a means of mentorship between female colleagues as well as between female faculty and residents.

Meetings

The Women in Surgery group will hold a minimum of four quarterly meetings for our female faculty and residents. These meetings can serve as a social team building exercise or as an educational resource opportunity for the members.

The Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) is a national organization committed to supporting women surgeons at various stages of their career. The MUSC chapter supports and is led by medical students interested in any field of surgery. AWS hosts events throughout the year, such as workshops to prepare students for surgical rotations, and mentorships with students and attendings. These events provide guidance and advice to women interested in pursing a surgical specialty. In addition, AWS hosts an annual surgical education conference for high school and college students to encourage a career in surgery.

Emily Wilson and Olivia Walkaowiak are the current co-presidents.

Dr. Laura Hollinger is the faculty advisor.
