ID Transplant Team

Patient Care

The Division of Infectious Diseases plays an integral role in treating and preventing viral, bacterial and parasitic diseases. To this end, the Division maintains an active clinical schedule, supporting inpatients at Medical University Hospital, Ashley River Tower, Rutledge Tower and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center; guiding infection control programs at all sites; providing central line insertion services; assisting with MUSC’s transplant programs; and holding numerous Infectious Disease clinics on and off the MUSC campus. Travel medicine clinics provide expert, pre-travel consultative services including travel immunizations and treatment for illnesses contracted while traveling abroad.

Outpatient Infectious Disease Services:

The Division also provides outpatient services for a variety of infectious diseases, including:

  • Patients with the HIV virus (Ryan White Clinic

Inpatient Consults

Division faculty see inpatient consults for all adult inpatient services at University Hospital and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. Infectious Diseases clinic patients are admitted to the University Hospital Hospitalist Service. Once admitted, the patient is followed by the Infectious Diseases consult team. Infected solid organ transplant patients are seen in consult by our specially trained Transplant Infectious Diseases team of physicians.

Peripherally Inserted Central Venous Lines

Infectious Diseases is not a procedure-oriented specialty, but in a departure from the usual infectious diseases services, the Division has, for >15 years, placed peripherally inserted central venous lines for use in long term antimicrobial therapy, TPN, chemotherapy, pain management and for patients for whom venous access is difficult, such as the massively obese (up to 1000 pounds). The Division currently places more than 800 such lines a year, using innovative techniques, ultrasound and fluoroscopy. The size and type of catheter is tailored to the patient’s needs in consultation with the patient’s physician.

This service is available to outpatients and inpatients. The procedure may be scheduled by calling the Bronchoscopy/PICC suite at 843-792-9071.
