The first clinical trial in the U.S. using allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to treat human disease is being led by MUSC [Medical University of South Carolina] Health rheumatologists Gary S. Gilkeson, M.D., and Diane L. Kamen, M.D., MSCR, who are studying their safety and efficacy in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a chronic, relapsing, multi-system autoimmune disease.
