Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Student Program

The Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Student Program is sponsored by the MUSC College of Medicine Dean's Office, the MUSC Group on Diversity Affairs, and individual departments. The goal of this program is to recruit talented 4th-year URM students to MUSC who have met all requirements for visiting student rotations listed in VSLO. The program provides support for Black/African American, Native American, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander students participating in a variety of rotations throughout MUSC.

All URM students selected for this program in participating departments will have their $175 rotation fee waived and will have the opportunity to meet with a member of the College of Medicine Dean’s Office and/or the residency program director during their time at MUSC to discuss available opportunities for URM students.

 

In addition, participating departments provide financial assistance to selected students for travel and educational related expenses. To apply for these funds, students must first submit a completed VSLO application including the department specific requirements listed on the MUSC Homepage in VSLO as well as the following (details listed by department):

Anesthesiology

  • Total students accepted: 1
  • Funding available: $1,000 toward educational expenses
  • Application deadline: June 1
  • Additional application requirements:
    • Email to ANES Coordinator Savannah Crocker expressing your desire to participate in this program.
    • USMLE Step 1 Board Score (official USMLE transcript or verification letter from home school).
    • Brief personal statement including why you want to come to MUSC and why you are interested in Anesthesiology (200-300 words).
    • One letter of support from an Anesthesiology faculty member at your home institution.

Dermatology

  • Total students accepted: 2
  • Funding available: $1,000
  • Application deadline: June 1
  • Additional application requirements:

Emergency Medicine

  • Total students accepted: 4
  • Funding available: up to $1,000 toward travel, housing, or educational expenses (reimbursed)

Neurosurgery
